Jean Grey as Phoenix

Jean Grey: Phoenix   Jean Grey is a mutant born with telepathic and telekinetic powers. She developed her mutant powers in childhood, and was contacted by Professor Charles Xavier (Professor X), and recruited into the already-formed X-Men.  Her first appearance was in X-Men #1, where she first met the other X-Men, including her future husband, Scott "Slim" Summers (Cyclops).  In that first issue, Professor X gave her the codename "Marvel Girl." In X-Men #107, Jean Grey gained new powers and a new name as Phoenix.  She was basically possessed by the "Phoenix Force," which gave her incredible powers and eventually corrupted her soul and turned her into an Omega-Level threat (ie. she can destroy whole solar systems and potentially the universe). The Dark Phoenix Saga, as the storyline became known, ended when Jean sacrificed herself to save everyone else.  From X-Men #129-138, Jean became the Dark Phoenix and, in a moment of clarity, allowed herself to die in order to end the threat of the Phoenix Force.
