Wasp (Janet Van Dyne): An Avenger's Biography

The Wasp (Janet Van Dyne)

The Wasp (Janet Van Dyne)

The Wasp- (Janet Van Dyne) --1st appearance: Tales to Astonish #44 (June 1963). The Wasp is an American superhero whose powers come from the "Pym Particles" invented by her ex-husband, Henry Pym. The Wasp can reduce herself to insect-size as well as to giant-size. When she is insect-sized, the Wasp can fly by means of insect-like wings (which appear only when she is reduced in size), and she can fire bio electric energy blasts, and she can communicate with and command insects. She is a founding member of the superhero group "The Avengers," and is known as a fashion resource for superheroes in need of new costumes. In her civilian identity, (the public at large is aware that Janet Van Dyne is the Wasp), she is a socialite fashion designer. She holds the unofficial superhero record for wearing the widest variety of alternate costumes. [xyz-ihs snippet="imageandtextbanner"] While as an Avenger, she counts among her enemies the whole of the Avengers Rogues Gallery of Villains, her personal nemesis is The Whirlwind, (originally called The Human Top), a mutant with super-speed powers. The Whirlwind is somewhat mentally unstable, and has an erotic fascination with the Wasp. So enraptured by the Wasp, the Whirlwind has stalked her by posing as her driver in order to be closer to her. In one episode, Whirlwind is seen hiring a prostitute to dress up in a Wasp costume, and then kills her. He then attempted to do to Janet Van Dyne what he did to the prostitute. Of course, her sometime hubby and lover, Hank Pym, saves the day and, as Giant-man, smashes the Whirlwind into the top of the Luxor Hotel in Vegas. This particular storyline is of interest in that shows in surprisingly graphic imagery the details of how Wasps and Yellowjackets mate in the wild, as it were...

Janet Van Dyne's relationships have figured strongly in her character portrayal as, shall we say, not the most honorable or reliable member of the Avengers. She constantly insults and belittles her boyfriend/husband, Hank Pym, flirts with many of the male Avengers, (starting with Thor in Avengers #1), and sleeps with, among others, Tony Stark and Hawkeye, and is, in general a ditz. She has her occassionalmoments of true super-heroineness, but overall, she is one of the weaker Avengers.
