Cullen Bunn and the Deadpool/Beneath the Planet of the Apes Connection

Cullen Bunn, the writer of the Deadpool titles that relate to the Marvel Zombie virus (Night of the Living Deadpool, Return of the Living Deadpool), is, one would assume, also a fan of the Planet of the Apes and of planting classical-reference Easter Eggs in his comic book work. As we get to the last part of  Bunn's Return of the Living Deadpool #3, the allegorical connections to the classic geek film, Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) becomes more apparent.  In both cases, (Deadpool and the movie), we have a protagonist who is different from his fellows (Deadpool is not the same kind of crazy as the post-zombie Deadpools; Charlton Heston can speak and is educated, unlike the other humans he encounters), and both hook up with a female while trying to survive in a world that seems crazy. In both cases, end up going underground and find an altar-like scene with a religious connotation.  In Deadpool's case, he encounters "Priest-Pools" who welcome him and ask which faction he belongs to.  In Heston's case, he learns about the mutant humans who live underground (and they happen look a lot like Wade Wilson sans mask!) and their pseudo-religious feelings for an atomic weapon.

This intrepid comic reviewer queried Cullen Bunn (@cullenbunn) on Twitter about all this, and his response was that the whole Apes/Deadpool connection was right on.  See the Twitter conversation with Mr. Bunn below:     As a sci-fi movie geek as well as, of course, a comic book nerd, this comics reviewer was in geek Heaven at the validity of this classical reference connection!  We look forward to Return of the Living Deadpool #4 to see which particular rabbit hole this leads us.  (Hmmm...rabbit hole...that is another potential classical reference...).

Compare the scene from Deadpool (above), with the scene from Beneath the Planet of the Apes...the connections seem very clear now!

Cullen Bunn is to be congratulated on inserting and melding two geek themes together so successfully (with a might assist from artist Nicole Virella, of course!)
