Wonder Woman- (Princess Diana of Themyscira) --1st appearance: All-Star Comics #8 (1941). Wonder Woman is perhaps the most physically powerful female superhero in the DC Comics Universe (DCU), and is often ranked among the top five heroes in strength. Wonder Woman is a founding member of the Justice League, and a close ally of Superman and Batman. According to her main origin story, Diana grew up on Themyscira, the famed and fabled island of the Amazons. She won a contest of strength and skill to be chosen as the representative of the Amazons in "the world of men," as the Amazons called the outside world. In her adventures in the wider world, she took the name of Wonder Woman, co-founded the Justice League of America, and became a true ambassador for her sisters in the community of nations. In the recent reboot of the DC Comics Universe, which is called the New 52, Wonder Woman is now paired with Superman in a romance that has elicited some controversy.
